November 2023 I had the most amazing opportunity to experience “A Day in the Life of a Fire Fighter” over Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service (tag in) supervised and lead by Steve Tidmarsh – Station Manager for Training and Development.
Having worked with the Service for over 6 years designing and delivering various training programmes now, this experience day has really opened my eyes to the fantastic job that the service does, and having the opportunity to be out at the stations operationally also helped me understand the daily pressures and stresses that they all experience particularly when out attending an incident.
During the day I got to observe many activities to help develop the Fire Fighters such as Breathing Apparatus Assessments in pitch black, and then smoke filled rooms, being part of the ALP (Ariel Ladder Platform) Training where I got to go up on the platform to 32 meters and see Leicestershire, and also attending some real life call out incidents and seeing how the different agencies work together in a fast paced highly stressful environment to save lives was just unbelievable!
The day was absolutely mind blowing and I would like to thank Chris Geary Watch Manager at Central Station, Steve Tidmarsh, Fiona Hollas and Maddie Purser from L&OD and all of the Fire Fighters, Crew Managers, Watch Managers and Station Managers that I got to meet and interact with throughout the day for making this experience one I will never forget.
